FAQs

+ How often do you have online sales?

Every piece in our collection is made with an investment of time, privileging craft and patience. Whether it is the days and nights of tending a firebox in a woodfiring, or the layers of surface created by handdrawing, handpainting, and inlay, every pot is it's own composition and takes quite a while to create. We are able to make enough inventory to host a sale every quarter, with periodic surprise sales throughout the year. To be notified of upcoming sales, please subscribe to our newsletter and/or follow us on social media. If you live in Athens, Georgia, we maintain a small gallery space of our work in-between online sales at our teaching studio, Good Dirt.

+ Are your pieces dishwasher & microwave safe?

Yes. We have put our pieces in the dishwasher and the microwave at home for years. To extend longevity and be extra cautious, you could wash the pieces by hand, but we have found this unnecessary. While I wouldn't attempt to boil water for tea, we've had no problems reheating food and drink in the microwave. Our recommendation would be to heat the piece (with food or drink) for 1 minute to see if your microwave differs from ours. If the piece seems hot, I would refrain from heating any longer than the 1 minute mark.

+ Are your glazes food safe?

Yes. Our glazes are formulated in-house from published recipes that have been tested for food safety. None of our glazes contain lead, barium, or cadmium. We use and enjoy our pieces every day and hope you will too.

+ Why "oxox"?

"Oxox" came about like all good things - unintentionally. We wanted a name that represented not only our love for each other, but the care and time with which we make our pieces. We knew "XOXO" was a bit saccharin and on the nose, so we jokingly asked each other at just about the same time, "What about "oxox"?"

At first, neither of us were really serious about the name, but as I started thinking about it, I realized that it had a deeper meaning for me. On Christmas, there was always a very specific order that we had to open our presents in. When I was younger, I just thought my mom was magic and had memorized what was what, but as I started hitting my pre-teen stride I realized that our big presents, the really really "good" ones, all had "OXOX, Mom & Dad" written on them, rather than the typical "XOXO". I was deliriously happy that I had cracked their gift-giving code. They still don't know I figured it out. (Well, I guess NOW they know). I knew when a package tag read either "OXOX, Mom & Dad" or the alternate, "Hugges & Kisses", (which my mom either wrote for symmetry or was embracing her inner Norweigan), I knew when I saw that, that this present was meant to be special, to be treasured, to be "the thing". (My dad picking up a camera might have also telegraphed it a bit).

And so, our little oxox pottery was born - an homage to the quirky generosity of family, our love for each other, and the time and attention we give to each piece, hoping that for you, too, our pottery will signify "a good one".

+ Do you take commissions for custom work?

Yes. If you are interested in discussing a project idea with us, we would love to hear from you. Email us and we can see if we are a good fit for your project.

+ Do you ship Internationally?

We haven't found a reliable and economic way to ship our pottery internationally. We hope that we'll soon have that resolved and be able to ship pieces anywhere in the world. Until then, if there is a piece that you would like, email us and we can find the most economical shipping option for you, and you can let us know if that number is acceptable.

+ How long does it take for an order to ship?

Orders will be packed and shipped within a week of ordering. Due to the impact of COVID, we're finding shipping to take slightly longer than usual to arrive at its destination.

+ Why do you ship in packaging from other companies?

You might receive your pottery in anything from a box from Kauai Coffee to a container from Four Sigmatic Mushrooms and everything in-between. We feel that reusing packaging is one small way that we can minimize our global impact and try to act with a sense of responsibility and mindfulness towards our business practices.

+ May I pick up my pieces in person?

Yes. If you would like to pick up from our studio in Athens, Georgia, use the code "LOCAL" at checkout to deduct shipping costs. We'll be in touch to arrange a time for you to safely pick up your pieces.

+ Do you teach workshops?

Yes. We teach workshops on wheel throwing, surface decoration and art collaboration. If you are interested in booking us for a workshop, please email us oxoxpottery@gmail.com

+ What materials & tools do you use?

Our materials vary depending on how we are planning to fire our pieces. For Cone 6 electric firing, we use a red clay from Georgia that is sadly no longer being produced. We dip our pieces in a white slip that we mix and our liner glazes are all mixed by us as well. For woodfirings, we use B-Mix clay specifically designed for the wood atmosphere, as well as porcelain and reclaimed clay mixes from our studio. For gas, we primiarly use Grolleg Porcelain and reclaim mix.

For drawing the surface, I use several tools to create a variety of line-making widths to provide visual interest. I use a Kemper needle tool, an exacto knife, calligraphy nibs and a machinist scribe for drawing, and am always exploring what other tools I can use for the outline and details. To paint, I use calligraphy brushes in a range of sizes and hairs. I use Velvet Underglaze by Amaco for painting and inlaying and a burnt umber wash for shadows and details after inlay.

+ Do you use transfers/decals/trace your drawings?

All my drawings are done freehand directly on the pottery to capture a spontaneity and liveliness of mark. I do not use transfers/decals/trace or even draw out my design with pencil first. I want the drawing to have it's own life and immediateness and do not want to create the same piece twice. Just as each bloom only lives once, so I want each work to be only made one time.
