Woodfired Tulip Magnolia Pinched Teacup 8oz *Heavy Ash

Tulip magnolias twist and turn and flip their petals across the surface of this woodfired teacup. The piece was made entirely in the hand, without the wheel, as a means of physical therapy for Jessica as she was trying to regain her sense of touch and retrain her fingers. Each piece was made in intervals of 10 seconds, the maximum amount of time that she could work on pottery in the beginning.

I chose to draw these flowers because, to me, they symbolize individuality, quirkiness, and the beauty of marching to the beat of your own drummer. This piece received heavy deposits of ash, blurring and softening the imagery. This piece won’t be for everyone, but I think the interaction of the wood kiln with the drawing is beautiful and symbolizes the unexpected beauty you can find when you’ve literally been through the fire.

The interior is beautiful, crystally blue, reminding us of ice and snow.
