Woodfired Turk's Cap Lilies & Swallowtail Butterflies
Lilies twist and turn across the surface of this handmade, woodfired vase as two swallowtail butterflies hover to collect its nectar. The piece was made on the pottery wheel by Rob and then given to Jess to illustrate. I chose to draw these flowers because of their unique petals that curl upwards, to me symbolizing their individuality and their quirkiness.
From Rob: The porcelaneous stoneware used to form this vase loves to react to the flame at the top of the kiln with rich red flashing and varying sheen from glossy red to soft tan matte. The drawn and painted details remain crisp around the entire surface of the form even as the color varies. The paired handles continue the swooped line of the rim and connect it to the curve of the narrow faces of this rounded rectangular vase form.
